Awareness Creation on GI
Geographical Indication (GI) is the only Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), which stipulates community ownership. As such creating awareness among the stakeholders on the issue is equally important.  Hence, the Textiles Committee has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign for creating awareness among the stakeholders through organising workshops/seminars. The main objectives of the nationwide campaign is to prepare the stakeholders particularly the manufacturing associations, exporter and trade associations, civil society organisations, institutions & centres of excellence and grass root level stakeholders associated with the production, marketing and overall development of the products on the emerging issues relating to Geographical indication, so that they can prepare themselves for protecting their products under the act. The Textiles Committee have organised 35 workshops in the country during 2005 to 2008 and sensitised more than15000 stakeholders including the representatives of state government, civil society organisations, manufacturing & trading associations etc. The workshop helped in creating awareness among the stakeholders on the need for registering the products under the Geographical Indication (GI) Act, 1999 and the benefits of it.
